Jurassic Park star Sam Neill dies aged 78
Acclaimed actor Sam Neill, best known for his roles in Jurassic Park, The Piano and Peaky Blinders, has died aged 78. The New Zealand screen legend passed away in Sydney, leaving behind a career spanning more than five decades in film and television.

Sam Neill, the celebrated actor known for his performances in Jurassic Park, The Piano and Peaky Blinders, has died at the age of 78.

Neill's family announced that he died unexpectedly in Sydney, Australia, on Monday. In a statement, they said he was surrounded by loved ones and passed away peacefully.

"Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life," the family said.

"The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free."

Neill was diagnosed with stage three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, in 2022. Earlier this year, he revealed he was cancer-free after taking a break from acting following his diagnosis. His family did not disclose the cause of death.

They also expressed gratitude to the medical team who cared for him, saying: "They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for their incredible care."

Over a career spanning more than 50 films, Neill earned a reputation as one of New Zealand's most accomplished actors. His performances ranged from blockbuster hits to critically acclaimed dramas, with memorable roles in Jurassic Park, The Piano, Event Horizon, Dead Calm, and The Tudors.

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Omagh, Northern Ireland, he moved to New Zealand with his family at the age of seven after his father retired from the army. At 11, he changed his first name to Sam, later recalling in his 2023 memoir that being called Nigel with an English accent made him an easy target at school.

His acting career began with school productions before he landed his breakthrough role in the 1977 New Zealand film Sleeping Dogs. International recognition followed with My Brilliant Career in 1979, before he went on to star alongside actors including Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and Holly Hunter.

Neill achieved worldwide fame in 1993 when he played palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park, a role he reprised in later films in the franchise. Although he famously auditioned for the role of James Bond in the 1980s, he later admitted his heart was never fully in the opportunity.

In 2022, he accepted a knighthood in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the film industry after previously declining the honour.

Tributes poured in following the news of his death. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described Neill as "one of the greats."

"He started out when there was barely a film industry in this country to speak of."

"For more than fifty years, he took New Zealand stories to the world, and his talents helped make our film industry into what it is today, one of our greatest cultural exports."

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also honoured the actor, writing: "Sam Neill starred in so many beloved Australian stories and he earned a special place in Australian hearts."

"Wry and dry, thoughtful and laconic, Sam fought illness with the same dignity, humour and conviction that gave strength to his every performance. He will be much mourned and long remembered. May he rest in peace."

Neill spent his later years dividing his time between Australia and his vineyard in New Zealand's Central Otago, where he produced Pinot Noir under the Two Paddocks label. He is survived by his two sons and two daughters.
